dive in

How breathtakingly kick-ass is this?! Since the photos speak for themselves I am only going to mention two things...

ONE: The above series of photographs are not photoshopped. These two models participated in a five day shoot where they free-dived, held their breaths and posed with these beautiful creatures.

TWO: I love when fashion meets public awareness for a good cause. Despite their name: whale shark, these creatures are gentle and harmless. Unfortunately, they're poached and sold for mainly their fins - BRUTAL.

Victory Americana

Moschino Spring 2011

Zac Posen Resort 2013

More Moschino here and below

As I sit here in the middle of the night thinking about what to wear for 4th of July (I'm going to a vintage 30s/40s themed event... ideas?), I can only wish our wardrobe could be like some of the images depicted from the 40s. I love fashion with a purpose & that reflects heavily on the time. Victory suits + victory rolls are trends that defined a large chunk of the 1940s because of WWII. So much came out of fashion & the image of women during this time when everything was scarce & rationed.
Fashion that preservers and redefines
(& we see it echoed again & again on current runways - now that's strength & longevity!)

Hope everyone in the States has a Happy & Safe 4th!!!

roaring

I (Jules) have been dying to do a roaring twenties post for so long, but the amount of images is overwhelming when trying to sieve through them and pick out the ones to blog. It could not be contained anymore; hence the first part of our roaring post!

I was walking pushed/cattled through  the Schiaparelli & Prada exhibit at the Met the other day and was itching to see more. On top of that, the trailer of The Great Gatsby movie that premieres at the end of this year was released and it's just one big giant visualgasm. And if you didn't already know Baz Luhrmann is the director of the film but ALSO directed the short film series at the Schiaparelli & Prada exhibit of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada sharing a dialog across a long dining table. - Side note: Luhrmann also did Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge so expect extravagance and over-the-top, people. - excitement!

I've always been a fan of the 20's and have studied the lives of artists and couturiers of that era (E.g. Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Marcel Duchamp, DalĂ, etc.). Dropped waists, bias cuts, draping, blunt haircuts, dark lips, cloche hats, jeweled bags & dresses, hybrids of geometrics/art deco and no restricting undergarments was a literal relief to many women of the time. It was a fantastic turn for fashion and for women to come forth as head couturiers of their own fashion house.

When fashion finds its liberation, falling in love is an oversimplification of what we can only feel.

Beware: this is just the beginning of the rebirth of this movement... more to come!
Enjoy this VERY long post of both old & new photographs, and let's hope this one ties us over for the extended holiday weekend! [Happy Memorial Day, as we celebrate the lives of people who gave theirs to help give us ours]
